A Thousand Splendid Suns

The name of my favourite book is “A Thousand Splendid Suns”, written by an Afghan-American author called Khaled Hosseini.

I love this book for several reasons. The first one is that one of my best friends told me that I should read it. That is a good start for everything: a good friend’s advice.

The book is basically about Afghan society and the role that women have in it. It takes place in Kabul in the 20th and 21st century. There are two women, called Mariam and Laila, whose stories are told separately at the beginning but then they find each other and take part of the same story. Their lives are marked by different drastic events and for that reason they develop a friendship and they support each other with great love.

The author really knows how to get the reader involved in this book. I had this feeling that I did not want it to end. I remember myself going to work to a city far from Buenos Aires; I was crying on the plane, forgetting where I was, just reading and being part of that tough life of the women that lived inside my book. That is another reason why I love this book: you can smell, taste and feel everything that happens on it.

This book was not only an excellent story for me, it also showed me how people live in a country like Afghanistan, from which I knew nothing.

It exceeded my expectations and I definitely would recommend this book as well as the other two from the same author: “The Kite Runner” and “And the Mountains Echoed”.
