General English Programme
Levels: Streamed classes at Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced levels.
Description: At the Dublin Cultural Institute we teach the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing using methods based
on current theories and research for the learning and teaching of English. Classroom work is interactive and teaching is enhanced
with the use of audiovisual aids such as listening comprehension, video lessons, songs, films, newspapers and other supplementary
material. Students are assessed on a regular basis and also before progressing to a higher level and their teachers will provide
regular feedback on the student's progress. We also place special emphasis on addressing the needs of the individual learner.
The teacher and the academic manager will also advise students on suitable courses to follow once they have completed the General
English programme.
On commencement of course all students will be given a placement test. This is a pen and paper test that takes about 30 minutes
to complete. You can get your results straight away and our staff will then be able to advise you on which course would suit
you best.
Our General English programmes are very popular amongst our students as they help them develop all the practical communication
skills, with special emphasis on speaking, pronunciation and listening. By learning and practicing the new language our students
will achieve greater fluency in everyday English. Very often students who complete the General English programme are able to
progress into one of our Exam Preparation courses or they may also choose to sit the TIE Exam.
Our courses provide a solid foundation for successful communication in spoken and written English.
The courses integrate key areas such as:
Vocabulary building
Grammar
Pronunciation
Speaking
Listening skills
Writing skills
The courses have been created so as to give the students an awareness of their own progress while also enabling them to
“survive” in the English-speaking world.
